The Winds of Change: Talking About Child Sexual Abuse Seminar to be held
/0 Comments/in Press Releases/by directorIn recognition of both Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month, Beyond Abuse and the Cass Elias McMather Guardian ad Litem Program are partnering to present a one hour educational session entitled “The Winds of Change: Talking About Child Sexual Abuse”.
This workshop will discuss the dynamics, prevalence, and warning signs of child sexual abuse. An overview of the South Carolina Mandated Reporter law will also be given. This workshop has been registered with the South Carolina Center for Child Care Career Development for DSS child care training requirements.
The free presentation is open to the public and will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at 3pm in the American Veterans Auditorium of the Greenwood County Library. For more information, please call Charlotte Ehney, Children’s Advocacy Program Director for Beyond Abuse, at 864-227-1623.
Weekend of Recovery – May 15, 2015 – Black Mountain, NC
/0 Comments/in Uncategorized/by directorMaleSurvivor will be holding a Weekend of Recovery May 15 – 17, 2015, at the Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, NC. MaleSurvivor’s Weekends of Recovery are open to any man, 18 or older, who has been sexually victimized as a child and /or assaulted or raped as an adult. The Weekends of Recovery are facilitated by trained psychotherapists, utilizing the same clinical boundaries and code of ethics as adopted by the American Psychological Association. The weekends are adjuncts to participants’ ongoing recovery work with individual and / or group psychotherapy and twelve step programs.
Agency announces new Staff

Brandon Platt has joined the agency as Outreach Coordinator and will be providing awareness and educational programs in the community with focus on college campuses. Having served three years in the Peace Corps in the Ukraine as an English teacher, Brandon holds a MA Degree in European History from Indiana State University and a BA Degree in History from USC Upstate.
Jennifer Azzarano has joined the agency as Education Specialist and will be providing educational programs in the three county area with focus on k-12th grade students, faculty and administration. She served 4 years in the US Navy as a Navy Corpsman, working in direct patient care as well as education. She is currently pursuing her BS Degree in Human Services.
Katelen Barger has joined the agency as Family Advocate. In this role, she will provide support and coordinate services for victims and their families. She holds MS Degree in Applied Developmental Psychology from Clayton State University and a BS Degree in Psychology from Lander University.
Elaine Morton has joined the agency as Client Services Administrator where she will provide intake and crisis support to victims and their families.
Elizabeth Wise has been promoted to Victim Services Manager. In this role she will be responsible for Victim Advocacy including recruitment, training, and management of all volunteers. She has been with the Beyond Abuse for three years and has served as Outreach Coordinator and Victim Advocate. She holds a BS Degree in Psychology from Lander University.
Kazee named President for PAHRA Board of Directors
/1 Comment/in Uncategorized/by directorLaura Kazee, Director of Finance and HR at Beyond Abuse, was recently appointed to serve as President for the Piedmont Area Human Resource Association for 2015. She will also serve as the SHRM Advocacy Captain for SC’s Third Congressional District and will be on the SC SHRM Bylaws Committee. Laura has been with Beyond Abuse since 2008.
Piedmont Area Human Resource Association (PAHRA) recently met at Piedmont Technical College and confirmed its Board of Directors for 2015. The group meets monthly for lunch and the presentation of a professional development topic by featured speakers. Meetings are designed to improve the human resource function of the members’ companies through education, discussion and networking. PAHRA is the local chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) which is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. Satellite Office officially opened

Partner agencies and community leaders were in attendance at the Ribbon Cutting for the new satellite office located on the campus of Hospice of Laurens County. This collaborative effort is the first phase of a long term strategy to expand services to victims in Laurens county.
Self Regional Healthcare Awards Agency $103,000

Santa Claus came a little early to five local nonprofit organizations working to improve the health and wellbeing of the community.Self Regional Healthcare has awarded $268,700 in its latest round of community improvement grants, which will:
- Provide AEDs (automatic external defibrillator) to public places that may need a way to respond to a heart-related emergency
- Help a local outreach organization begin offering preventive care health services
- Maintain the facility that houses the Soup Kitchen, Clinica Gratis, United Way and other critical access agencies
- Help provide treatment for children and adults of sexual violence and abuse
- Assist bilingual/bicultural patients who require healthcare services including diabetes management, medical referrals and mental health screening and counseling.
The five local organizations receiving community outreach funding:
- Community Initiatives, Inc./Clinica Gratis — $40,000
- Beyond Abuse — $103,000
- Self Regional’s Heart and Vascular Community Outreach — $16,020
- Greater Greenwood United Ministry — $64,750
- United Center for Community Care — $45,000
With these grants, the amount of community funding Self Regional has provided in 2014 totals $858,200. The Community Outreach committee, which consists of community and business leaders, physicians, and representatives from Self Regional, consider proposal requests and make decisions on funding.
